Electro-Magnetic Induction

Electro - Magnetic Induction

An electric current produced in a closed circuit by a changing magnetic field is called an induced current. This phenomenon is called electromagnetic induction.

The potential difference in the circuit due to induced current is called induced emf. This was discovered by Michael Faraday and Joseph Henry in 1831.

Faraday and Henry both discovered that electric current could be produced in a wire simply by moving a magnet in or out of a coil of wire. No battery or other source of voltage needed, only the motion of a magnet in the wire loop is needed. Moving a bar magnet towards a coil sets up an electric current in the coil circuit, as indicated by deflection in galvanometer needle

Galvanometers is a current-detecting instruments. The needle deflects when a current passes through it. In one type of galvanometer, the needle stays at the zero mark at the middle when no current passes through it  When a current passes through it, the needle gets deflected. The needle is deflected towards the right or the left from its middle position, depending on the direction of the current.
